Cross wall construction may be defined as a technique of building construction in which the precast load-bearing walls are set perpendicular to the lateral axis of the building.

In this type of construction, the floors, roofs, and beams are reinforced by load-bearing walls.

The structures formed with the cross-wall technique are structurally efficient and cheap.

This type of construction is also known as box frame construction.

  1. Features of Cross Wall Construction

The features of cross-wall construction are as follows:

a. In cross-wall construction, the prefabricated walls are kept in series.

b. These load-bearing walls transmit the structural loads safely to the foundation without the necessity for a concrete or steel frame.

c. They also work as shear walls thus controlling the building from sideways motion.

d. Cross-wall construction is sufficiently appropriate for buildings with a maximum of 5 stories where all the floors have duplicate plans.

e. The intermediate floor span in between the load-bearing walls supplies adequate sideways restraint.

f. If both the load-bearing walls and the floors are precast members, then a series of boxes are formed.

  2. Construction Procedure of Cross Wall

The construction of the cross wall is as follows:

a. Precast components are carried to the location for the preparation of the cross wall.

b. The precast wall components are set both horizontally and vertically. They are grouted and connected as per the plan with the use of undercover joints and ties.

c. Before finishing the whole structure, mechanical & electrical installation works, finishing works, and other miscellaneous works on the walls have to be achieved.

  3. Way to Connect Cross Wall

The cross walls may be connected in 3 ways that are as follows:

a. Wall-to-wall by Horizontal Joints

b. Wall-to-wall by vertical joints

c. Wall to the base foundation

  4. Uses of Cross Wall Construction

1. It makes the structure unbending and substantial.

2. It makes the structure highly suitable for acoustic separation.

  5.  Advantages of Cross Wall

The advantages of cross walls construction are as follows:

1. The initial construction cost of the cross-wall is less.

2. No need for scaffolding during the construction of the Cross wall.

3. The construction of cross walls gains good thermal mass.

4. It provides great security.

5.  The structure stays monolithic with suitable airtightness.

6. Cross-wall construction method conserves massive time and cost.

7. It is highly resistant to fire.

  6. Disadvantages of Cross Wall

The disadvantages of cross-wall construction are as follows:

1. Difficult to prepare a suitable plan.

2. Skilled manpower is needed.

3. Inappropriate design and construction of connections impact the durability of the structure.
