The newton-meter (N·m) is termed as a unit of work or energy and in this context is equivalent to the joule, the SI unit of energy.

In this use, it is defined as the energy shared with an object by a Newton force operating on that object in the direction of its motion over a distance of 1 meter.

A foot-pound (ft·lb or ft·lbf) is a unit of work or energy in the imperial and United States customary systems of units. It is defined as the energy transferred when a force of one pound-force is applied over a linear displacement of one foot.
