The density of Sand varies between 1450 to 2082 kg/m³.

✔ Sand is commonly defined by size, i.e., finer than gravel and coarser than silt, ranging from 0.06mm to 2mm.

✔ It is a granular material composed of rock and mineral particles that occur naturally. It is widely available on the Earth’s surface, formed through the gradual weathering and erosion of rocks over extended periods.

✔ Most types of Sand are formed by soil erosion, weathering of the rocks, broken pebbles, and gravels carried by rivers, streams, etc.

✔ The elemental composition of Sand mainly includes unconsolidated granular materials consisting of rock fragments, mineral particles, or oceanic materials.

1. What is the Density of Sand?

There is no constant density of Sand, and it varies according to the type and nature of the Sand. The density of Sand varies between 1450 – 2082 kg/m³.

Type of SandDensity (kg/m³)Description
Loose Sand1442Dry Sand that has been agitated to loosen the natural packaging.
Dry Sand1602Sand in its undisturbed natural form, partially compacted.
Packed Sand1682Sand that has been manually or mechanically compacted.
Wet Sand1922Sand in a naturally compressed environment that is now wet.
Wet-Packed Sand2082Compacted Sand is almost saturated with water.
M Sand (Manufactured)1850Artificial Sand with a specific gravity of around 2.56.
River Sand1650Sand from rivers, 1650 kg/m³ means 1 cubic meter of river sand.

a. Density of Loose Sand:

✔ The density of loose Sand is 1442 kg/m³.

It is dry Sand that has been moved or agitated to loosen the natural packaging process.

b. Density of Dry Sand:

✔ The density of dry Sand is 1602 kg/m³.

It is Sand in its undisturbed natural form, where it has been partially compacted by rain and gravity over time but is now dry.

c. Density of Packed Sand:

✔ The density of packed Sand is 1682 kg/m³.

Sand that has been packed manually or mechanically (compacted).

d. Density of Wet Sand:

✔ The density of wet Sand is 1922 kg/m³.

This Sand has been in a naturally compressed environment that is now wet.

e. Density of Wet-Packed Sand:

✔ The density of wet-packed Sand is 2082 kg/m³.

This is compacted Sand that is also almost saturated with water.

f. Density of M Sand:

✔ M sand has a density of 1850 kg/m³.

M sand means manufactured Sand, also called artificial Sand.

Its specific gravity is about 2.56, and its F. M. value lies around 3.10.

g. Density of River Sand:

✔ The density of river sand is 1650 kg/m3, which means 1650 kg of river sand occupies 1 cubic meter of volume.

2. Density of Sand Based on Extraction

Based on Extraction, the Density of Sand can be given as:

Type of SandDescriptionDensity in Kg/m³
River SandDry and extracted from the bottom of freshwater bodies.1500-1540
River Alluvial SandIt is extracted by the alluvial method and has a 1.6-1.9 mm fraction.1650
Career Sand NormalProduced in quarries and foundation pits using the reclamation method1500-1520
Career Sand Fine-Grained, Seedy DryProduced in quarries and foundation pits using the reclamation method1800-1850
Construction Sand NormalCommonly used type of Sand in construction.1680
Construction Sand LooseUsed in lightweight concrete preparation.1450
NauticalThe Sand of medium size, located at the bottom of the seas1600
RavineOpen areas include a large number of impurities that reduce technical characteristics1400-1420
SlagProduced by recycling waste from the metallurgical industry700-1200
PerliteExtracted from swollen volcanic hard rock by crushing75-400
GravellyIt has a large number of gravel impurities and requires screening1750-1900
