  6. Difference Between PPC and OPC

Factors OPC PPC
Strength Initial strength is higher than PPC. PPC has higher strength than OPC over a more extended period.
Heat of Hydration It generates more heat than PPC in the hydration reaction, making it less suitable for mass casting. It has a slow hydration process and thus generates less heat than OPC.
Durability Less durable in aggressive weather. More durable in aggressive weather.
Cost Costlier than PPC. Cheaper than OPC.
Environmental impact Emits CO2 during the manufacturing process. It constitutes industrial and natural waste, making it eco-friendly compared to OPC.
Application It is suitable where fast construction is required but not suitable for mass concreting due to heat issues. It is suitable for all types of construction work.
Setting Time Its initial setting time is 30 minutes, and the final setting is 280 minutes; its faster setting times help speedier construction. The setting time of PPC is higher than OPC. Its initial setting time is 30 minutes, and the final setting time is 600 minutes. Its slower setting helps to get a better finish.
Fineness OPC has a fineness of 225 sq. m/kg. It has lower fineness than PPC. So, it has higher permeability, resulting in lower durability. OPC has a fineness of 300 sq. m/kg. It has higher fineness than OPC. So, it has lower permeability, resulting in higher durability.
Grades 33 Grade, 43 Grade, and 53 Grade OPC cement are available. No specified grade of PPC cement is available. But also in the market, 33 grade, 43 grade, and 53 grade PPC cement are found.

  7. Application of PPC & OPC Cement

Cement may be prescribed as a material with adhesive and cohesive properties, which make it capable of bonding mineral fragments into a compact whole.

Cement is vital in the construction of small buildings and big mega projects.

Before moving to rate, let me clarify three things:

i. Field Application of OPC and PPC  cement

a. OPC Cement:

Mostly used in concreting (ढलाई) of structural members where a fast setting time is required. E.g., slabs, columns, etc.

Some features of OPC cement are:

~ Sets quickly

~ It helps to maintain the economy of the project. i.e., mainly saves the time and cost of formwork.

~ Expensive compared to PPC cement

~ In the long run, crack formation is higher in OPC cement than in PPC.

b. PPC Cement:

Primarily used in plastering and masonry works ( जड़ाई ) like stone masonry, brick masonry, etc.

Some features of PPC cement are:

~ Sets slowly

~ Cheaper compared to OPC cement

~ In the long run, it is more durable than OPC cement.

ii. Generally, the cement rate increases with the increase in cement grade.

For, 43-grade cement is more expensive than 33-grade cement, and 53-grade cement is more costly than 43-grade.

iii. 33-grade, 43-grade, and 53-grade cement are found in the market

~ 33 grade:

The compressive strength of the cement after 28 days is 33 N/mm2 when sampled as per Indian Standards under standard conditions.

They are used in temporary structures.

They are used for plastering, tiling, brickwork and stone masonry, flooring, pathways, etc.

~ 43 grade:

Mainly used grade of cement.

The compressive strength of the cement after 28 days is 43 N/mm2 when sampled as per Indian Standards under standard conditions.

It is utilized in very small to large permanent constructions.

The cement used in constructing our house/buildings is also 43 grade.

~ 53 grade:

The compressive strength of the cement after 28 days is 53 N/mm2 when sampled as per Indian Standards under standard conditions.

It mainly prepares higher-grade concrete like M45, M60, etc.

High-grade concrete is used in special constructions like nuclear power plant construction, airport runway construction, etc.
