A Measure Tape is a tool used in engineering that may be defined as a tool used for dimension measurement.
The measuring tape is majorly utilized to calculate length, width, and height and it is prepared of materials like metal, plastic, fiberglass, and cloth.
1. Marking On Measuring Tape
The Measure tape is labeled with various units such as centimeters, meters, inches, and feet.
2. Parts of a Measuring Tape
There are various parts of measuring tape and each has its meaning.
Belt Clip
The belt clip thoroughly permits the measuring tape to be attached to your belt so you can always have it on hand.
Hook: The hook, placed at the end of the tape reaches in handy when calculating hard surfaces such as tables. You may see that the hook is loose; this is intentional to provide accuracy. If the hook has a hole in it, this is so it can seize onto screws.
Thumb Lock
The thumb lock is prepared to support your tape in place at your chosen length. It controls your tape from automatically retracting back into its housing when taking out dimensions. Just remove the thumb lock to place the tape measure back in its case.
Blade/Tape
The most essential component of your tape measure, the blade is what shows you your dimensions. Imperial units are usually on the top row and metrics are on the bottom.
Case
The case is employed to wrap the tape. This is also accountable for making tape durable and long-lasting for service. The case is assembled from metal, plastic, and other rubber materials.
3. How To Read Measure Tape?
The measuring tape is separated into two components horizontal TOP Part and the BOTTOM Part.
a. Top Part Measuring Tape
The top part of the measuring tape is fractioned with inches. It implies you can take dimensions in feet on the top part of the tape.
Each Part is equivalent to 1 Inch.
Again, This part is splited into 16 parts.
2nd Black line is equivalent to 1/8th of an inch
4th Black line is equivalent to 1/4th of an inch
6th Black line is equivalent to 3/8th of an inch
8th Black line is equivalent to 1/2nd of an inch
10th Black line is equivalent to 5/8th of an inch
12th Black line is equivalent to 3/4th of an inch
14th Black line is equivalent to 7/8th of an inch
There is a number noted on the top part of the measuring tape like 1 inch, 2 inches, 3 inches, and so on.
As we know 12 inches = 1 foot
Therefore, at every 12th-inch foot marking is accomplished.
12″ = 1 ft
24″ = 2 ft
36″ = 3 ft
48″ = 4 ft so on.
b. Bottom Part Measuring Tape
The bottom part of the measuring tape was fractioned by centimeters. It means you can read dimensions in millimeters, centimeters, and meters on the top part of the tape.
A centimeter is also divided into 10 parts and each part is equal to 1 millimeter.
10 mm = 1 cm
100 cm = 1 m
Here, the smallest division reading can be written on the bottom part is 1 mm and the largest division reading can be written on tape is 1 m.
