Why does Cement Price Change in India?

Being a civil engineer and having contractors as friends, I have seen many construction businesses failing due to sudden fluctuations in material prices. One of the most volatile and price-fluctuating materials is cement.

Although, for simple construction project, the sudden change in price of cement do less affect but for large construction projects even little increase in price of one bag of cement can makes the noticeable difference when there is need of hundred of thousands of bags for construction.

According to my suppliers analysis and by my own experience i have listed some factors for the sudden fluctuations in cement price in India with understandable explaination:

1. Cost of Raw Materials

For manufacturing cement there is requirement of some raw materials such as limestone, clay, etc. Change in these materials price and their availability indirectly affect the overall costs of the cement. There should be proper availability of limestone near cement plants because transporting from far location can increase in production costs.

2. Energy and fuel Costs

Cement manufacturing consumes energy heavily. For the different stages of production, especially in kiln and grinding process Coal, petcoke, electricity and other different fuels were used.

When there is increase in the costs of electricity and fuel , the manufacturing process costs also increases which in turn its impact can be observed in the Indian cement markets.

3. Transportation Costs

As we know, cement is a heavy construction material so increase in it’s transportation costs plays important role for the price stability.

Transportation cost is increased when there is increase in the price of diesel, freights rate or mainly the transportation distance of cement  from manufacturing plants or distributors to dealer or directly to the construction site.

From my perspective, I think this is one of the major reason for fluctuations of cement price between different cities and regions.

4. Demand and Supply

I think the demand from the construction and infrastructure sector directly influences the cement price. When I was involved in the large construction projects at that time the demand for cement is at peak and due to the less supply of cement the market price shows significant growth.

And, not only that when I was in other large construction projects I get to know these price hike several time in my working period. The good thing is, for small construction projects these is less pressure for price with adequate supply.

5. Seasonal construction Activity

We found that, construction activity is not uniform throughout the year. Especially during the residential, commercial, road and other infrastructures are more active at that the increase in demand for cement is high.

During monsoon and sometimes unexpected weather condition can make construction activity more lengthy in different parts of India. When there is changes in the demand in seasonal construction activity the cement price may get influence.

6. Cement Brand and Grade

We know that the price of cement depends on brand and grade. For example, we can see that the market price of OPC, PPC, PSC is different because each brands has its own composition, properties, manufacturing process, and their uses.

The price can be different for each brand based on manufacturing costs, distribution network, market positioning, etc.

Hence, comparing the two different cement bags by taking weight as a reference does not provide a meaningful price comparison until we get to know their type grade and specifications.
